mixing zone

« Back to Glossary Index

A mixing zone refers to the area of a receiving water body where the effluent undergoes dilution and in which some of the water quality criteria do not apply.  Water quality criteria in the mixing zone can be exceeded as long as acutely toxic conditions are prevented. EPA policy does not allow mixing zones to extend from bank to bank; there must always be a ‘zone of passage’ where all water quality standards are met.
