Department of Water Resources
The Department of Water Resources is charged with managing the state's water resources. The Department operates the State Water Project, regulates dams, provides flood management and emergency operations, implements the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), and provides grants and technical assistance to local agencies.
DWR's major responsibilities include:
- Maintaining and operating the State Water Project
- Regulation of dams
- Flood management and emergency operations
- Supporting and implementing the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA)
- Working to preserve the natural environment and wildlife
- Developing the California Water Plan
- Educating the public about the importance of water, water conservation, and water safety
- Providing grants and technical assistance to assist local agencies
