A Groundwater Recharge Guide for Vineyards helps California winegrape growers assess recharge opportunities and outline a plan for their operation. Developed by Sustainable Conservation for the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, it covers site suitability, water sources, vine health, water quality, recharge methods, costs, and incentives. Decision tools, grower examples, and a planning worksheet support next steps with local technical assistance providers.
A Groundwater Recharge Guide for Vineyards combines Sustainable Conservation’s expertise in on-farm groundwater recharge with the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance’s expertise in sustainable winegrape production. The guide is designed to help winegrape growers address groundwater sustainability challenges.
The guide presents science-based methods for evaluating vineyard recharge options and implementing recharge safely and sustainably. Topics include managed aquifer recharge (MAR), the legal frameworks and natural resource considerations that influence farm-level recharge options, and practical guidance for conducting groundwater recharge. A series of questions supports development of a preliminary vineyard recharge plan that can be shared with a local Technical Service Provider to prepare a detailed Groundwater Recharge Plan.
