The Delta Science Program is proud to share that, following years of development and extensive engagement with the region’s science community, the 2026 Delta Science Plan: Strengthening Science in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is now available online.
The Delta is one of California’s most valuable and complex ecosystems, and there is a shared sense of urgency to protect and manage its resources. A coordinated scientific approach is essential to help us understand the region’s complicated dynamics, anticipate future threats, and guide decisions.
Following the versions released in 2013 and 2019, the 2026 Delta Science Plan serves as the updated “how-to” guide for a more collaborative and forward-looking approach to science in the region. It comprises 24 Actions and 8 Resources, structured around four grand challenges facing the region: anticipating new conditions, rapid environmental change, decentralized flows of information, and siloed decision-making.
The Actions provide a framework for thinking big and investing in collaborations, tools, and relationships that turn shared knowledge into collective action.
The Resources provide practical, useful information that can be used independently to move the Actions forward.
Together, they provide the principles and approaches for a more forward-looking Delta science community, one that collaboratively addresses the grand challenges and moves us from vision to action. All who visit the Delta Science Plan are invited to help implement the Actions and utilize the Resources to help build a more connected, collaborative, and resilient Delta.
