STATE WATER BOARD: Completed Wastewater Needs Assessment (WWNA) Phase 1 Report Completed

From the State Water Resources Control Board

The State Water Board launched the Wastewater Needs Assessment (WWNA) in 2023 to evaluate California’s wastewater infrastructure and prioritize investments needed to upgrade aging or inadequate wastewater systems—including septic systems with the goal of protecting water quality and public health. Phase 1 is complete, documenting data, methods, and preliminary findings to guide investment strategies. Phase 2 is expected to be completed in June 2027 to include final results and recommendations.

Main Takeaways:

  • The Human Right to Sanitation is inseparable from the Human Right to Water.
  • This is the first comprehensive wastewater infrastructure assessment in the nation.
  • WWNA provides actionable data to guide investments and address aging, inadequate wastewater systems.

Please see the completed Phase 1 Report for the WWNA posted on the WWNA Website.
