Water Supply Strategy

In August 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom released California’s Water Supply Strategy (WSS) – Adapting to a Hotter Drier Future, which outlines a strategy and priority actions to adapt and protect water supplies from the effects of rising temperatures and drier conditions due to climate change.

To ensure California has the water needed for generations to come, the Water Supply Strategy calls for creating up to 4 MAF in new groundwater and surface water storage; recycle and reuse at least 800,000 AF of water per year by 2030; conserve up to 500,000 AF up water through more efficient water use; and create new supplies by capturing stormwater and using brackish and seawater desalination.
