Instream flow is the use of water within its natural watercourse as specified in a contract, a water rights permit, a court order, a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license, or other documentation.

Instream flows support natural ecosystems, create habitat for plants and animals, and may provide additional benefits including recreation.
