head

« Back to Glossary Index
Available difference in hydraulic head across a hydroelectric dam, before head losses due to turbines, wall friction and turbulence.

The hydraulic head, or total head, is a measure of the potential of the water fluid at the measurement point. Knowledge of the hydraulic head distribution in an area allows one to estimate the direction and rate of flow according to Darcy’s law.
