As a verb, the U.S. Geological Survey defines groundwater recharge as the “inflow of water to a groundwater reservoir from the surface.”

When used as a noun in water budgets and hydrologic models, it often refers to the volume of water infiltrated during any particular water year or weather event.

Defined under SGMA, it means “augmentation of groundwater, by natural or artificial means.”
