In the news today …

Approved by water agencies, killed by voters: the California water bond:  “Among the notable defeats on election day was a proposed $9 billion water bond in California.  “California voters rejected a water bond for the first time in almost 30 years, disregarding pleas from its backers that the money would fix crumbling infrastructure, bring clean drinking water to disadvantaged communities and kick-start badly needed environmental restoration projects,” The Sacramento Bee reported. ... ”  Read more from Water Online here:  Approved by water agencies, killed by voters: the California water bond

GOP Rep. Denham falls behind Democrat Harder:  “Republican Rep. Jeff Denham lost his lead over Democrat Josh Harder on Friday in one of California’s four unresolved congressional races as updated ballot counts showed the GOP in growing danger of losing as many as six House seats in the state.  GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of Costa Mesa fell further behind Democrat Harley Rouda, who is now more than 7,300 votes ahead of the 15-term congressman. ... ”  Read more from the LA Times here:  GOP Rep. Southern California fire disaster may worsen as strong winds howl for multiple days: “A dangerous situation is unfolding across Southern California as a multi-day Santa Ana wind event threatens to worsen the already deadly and destructive firestorm early this week.  A pattern similar to what led to the rapid spread of the Camp and Woolsey fires late last week has returned.  “Santa Ana winds ramped back up on Sunday and bouts of moderately strong wind gusts are anticipated through at least Tuesday,” according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Alyson Hoegg. … ”  Read more from AccuWeather here:  Southern California fire disaster may worsen as strong winds howl for multiple days

In commentary today …

Dan Walters: Newsom will find a stack of Brown leftovers:  “Gavin Newson will not begin his governorship in January with a budget deficit, but nevertheless, Gov. Jerry Brown will leave him a stack of knotty managerial and policy issues that cannot be ignored.  The two most obvious are Brown’s two pet public works projects, twin tunnels to carry water beneath the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and a north-south bullet train. ... ”  Read more at Cal Matters here:  Dan Walters: Newsom will find a stack of Brown leftovers

Steve Lopez: One California calamity after another, and yet we always endure:We have no hurricanes, cyclones or statewide freezes in California.  Everything else, we have. Earthquakes, yes. Torrential downpours, yes. Mudslides, yes. Extended droughts, yes. A president who kicks us when we’re down, yes.  All that, as well as mass shootings and wind-whipped killer firestorms that devour parched vegetation, homes, people and everything else in their path. … ”  Read more from the LA Times here:  One California calamity after another, and yet we always endure
