DWR policy advisor receives recognition for work with California Tribes

“With over 30 years of advocacy experience on behalf of California’s Native American tribes, Department of Water Resources Tribal Policy Advisor Anecita Agustinez was recently honored with a resolution from the California State Assembly. Her recognition is a testament to DWR’s commitment to ongoing tribal government relationships on critical state water policies.

Assembly Resolution 1779 was presented to Agustinez at the 51st Annual Native American Day on September 28, 2018 in front of thousands of people at the State Capitol. Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, who represents the Coachella Valley, authored the resolution recognizing her outstanding contributions to the Native American community and the State of California. … ”

New Fact Sheet Released on Water Service Disconnections in California

From the Pacific Institute:

“When a person fails to pay their water utility bill, their water service can be disconnected. Lack of water in the home compromises health, and renders housing legally uninhabitable and untenantable. Shutoffs also pose a financial burden; in addition to the original debt, there are usually fees associated with late payment, notice of an impending shutoff, and service reconnection.

A new fact sheet from the Pacific Institute surveys California water utilities and summarizes practices and fees associated with water shutoffs in the state. It includes recommendations for water utilities to reduce shutoff rates and increase revenue collection by improving debt and service disconnection practices. The recommendations would allow some residents to avoid water shutoffs, thereby supporting public health and housing security. … ”
