The revised Bacteria Provisions, Staff Report, and Response to Comments are now available for “Part 3 of the Water Quality Control Plan for Inland Surface Waters, Enclosed Bays and Estuaries of California—Bacteria Provisions and a Water Quality Standards Variance Policy” (Part 3 of the ISWEBE) and the “Amendment to the Water Quality Control Plan for Ocean Waters of California—Bacteria Provisions and a Water Quality Standards Variance Policy” (Ocean Plan Amendment) (Part 3 of the ISWEBE and the Ocean Plan Amendment are collectively referred to as the Bacteria Provisions). The documents can be found at the State Water Boards Website: http://www.waterboards.ca.gov/bacterialobjectives/.
The Bacteria Provisions include revised water quality objectives for fecal indicator bacteria for the protection of the water contact recreation beneficial use, a definition of the limited water contact recreation beneficial use, implementation provisions, and a separate water quality standards variance policy applicable to all pollutants. The Bacteria Provisions, Staff Report, and Response to Comments were revised to retain the fecal coliform water quality objective as currently written in the Ocean Plan after the State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) received information about California-specific epidemiological studies relevant to the choice of indicators proposed in the Ocean Plan Amendment.
