They question why money is being allocated at this time; urge focus on water recycling, stormwater capture, and other solutions
Congressmembers have written Governor Brown, asking for a detailed accounting of how the $3.6 million allocated in part to pay for incorporation of the Cal Water Fix into the Delta Plan would be spent.
The letter is signed by Congressmembers Jerry McNerney, Jared Huffman, Mark DeSaulnier, John Garamendi, Mike Thompson, and Doris Matsui.
“We would like to know how the $3.6 million will be used and would appreciate a more detailed discussion with your administration as to why budgetary funding was deemed necessary for the regulatory review of the WaterFix tunnels at this time,” they write, noting that the project has not received any of the necessary state or federal permits at this time, and serious concerns remain.
The letter also notes that the allocation is from the general fund, but also contains funding from the 2014 Proposition 1 Water Bond. “You made a promise to all Californians that no money from Proposition 1 would be used for the Water Fix tunnels,” they point out.
Instead of the tunnels, the Congressmembers urge a focus on increasing recycling, conservation, stormwater capture, and groundwater banking.
