In the news today …

State to ban wasteful uses of water, but it won’t actually save that much:  “You’ve seen them: the sprinklers that only water the sidewalk, or the people who let the hose run while they wash their cars. On Tuesday, state water officials are expected to vote to ban those and other wasteful uses of water—for good. But the catch is, it won’t actually save that much water.  Here’s what you need to know about the new rules. … ”  Read more from KPCC here:  State to ban wasteful uses of water, but it won’t actually save that much

Snow, record cold to plunge southward through Western US:  “The same storm that caused officials to close a section of Interstate 90 in Washington on Saturday will continue to spread snow and unusually cold air across the western United States early this week.  “After a very warm start to February, this storm will signal a pattern change by dragging much colder air into the region,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Max Vido said.  “Plowable snow will accompany the colder air, bringing slippery travel and snow-covered roads to a good portion of the interior West.” … ”  Read more from AccuWeather here:  Snow, record cold to plunge southward through Western US

Low snow shuts down Eastern Sierra winter recreation zone:  “The sorry state of the snowpack in the Sierra has forced a ban on snowmobiling at a popular recreation area near the California-Nevada line until further notice.  It’s one of the earliest seasonal closings ever at the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area, according to the U.S. Forest Service.  Officials said 2018 would be its shortest season on record if the area doesn’t reopen. … ”  Read more from the AP here:  Low snow shuts down Eastern Sierra winter recreation zone

DWR issues $85.8M in grants for groundwater project funding; Yuba area agencies may qualify:  “With the threat of another drought looming over the horizon, California farmers may have to look underground to irrigate their fields. That can be touchy for water tables, but local water districts may qualify for state funding of groundwater sustainability projects. The Department of Water Resources is issuing $85.8 million in grants and area agencies are included. Grants are funded through government bonds issued under Proposition 1, which was passed in 2014 to ensure funding for state water projects. ... ”  Read more from the Appeal Democrat here:  DWR issues $85.8M in grants for groundwater project funding; Yuba area agencies may qualify

Marin foundation gives $195,000 for San Rafael marsh project:  “The Marin Community Foundation is providing $195,000 for the Marin Audubon Society to address habitat degradation from the rising water along San Rafael’s shore.  The project area is the 20-acre Tiscornia Marsh and a nearby levee near the San Rafael Canal. The project will develop a conceptual design to stabilize the significantly eroding tidal marsh as a first line of defense against rising seas. ... ”  Read more from the Marin Independent Journal here:  Marin foundation gives $195,000 for San Rafael marsh project

Public Water Now, Cal Am already sparring on public takeover bid with petition still circulating:  “A face-off between Public Water Now and California American Water has begun even before qualification of a proposed ballot measure in pursuit of a public takeover of the Monterey district water system.  Public Water Now has been collecting signatures on a petition aimed at getting a measure on the November general election ballot for months now. The organization’s managing director George Riley said some 75 people have collected about 5,500 signatures expected to be valid, just short of the 6,200 needed by early April to get the measure on the ballot. … ” Read more from the Monterey County Herald here:  Public Water Now, Cal Am already sparring on public takeover bid with petition still circulating

From waste to taste: Orange County sets Guinness record for recycled water: “The Orange County Sanitation and Water Districts are working hard to get rid of reclaimed water’s perception problem, “the yuck factor,” as Denis Bilodeau, president of the water district calls it, of converting wastewater to a liquid that exceeds government standards for purity.  For a decade, the Orange County Groundwater Replenishment System, has been pumping reclaimed water into the ground basin. Over the weekend, to celebrate the groundwater system’s 10th anniversary, the districts partnered on a world record-setting endeavor. In 24 hours, more than 100 million gallons of wastewater was converted into potable – or suitable for drinking – water and pumped it into the country ground basin. … ”  Read more from the OC Register here:  From waste to taste: Orange County sets Guinness record for recycled water
